How to Cut Your Security Camera Storage Requirements Without Cutting Corners

When you’re planning a new camera system especially one with legal retention requirements storage becomes the elephant in the room. One year of 24×7 recording across 24 cameras is a massive amount of data. If you don’t optimize your configuration, you’ll end up paying for storage you don’t actually need.

Here are practical, real world ways to bring those storage requirements down while still meeting compliance standards.

1. Not Every Camera Needs 24×7 Recording

A lot of retention rules only apply to interior cameras. Exterior cameras often fall under different requirements, and in many cases motion only recording is perfectly acceptable.

If you have 24 cameras and half of them are outside, switching those to motion based recording can cut your storage footprint dramatically. Outdoor scenes naturally have less constant motion, so you save space without losing critical footage.

2. Reduce Resolution (Yes, Really)

Everyone loves the idea of 4K cameras. But legally, you usually only need a clear, identifiable shot, not cinema‑grade footage.

720p is often more than enough for compliance.
1080p is a great middle ground if you want a bit more clarity.

Dropping from 4K to 720p can reduce storage consumption by 70–80% per camera. That’s not a small optimization that’s a game changer.

3. Lower the Frame Rate

You’re not producing a movie. You’re capturing evidence.

Most systems default to 30 FPS, but for security footage:

15 FPS is typically more than sufficient.

Cutting the frame rate in half cuts your storage in half. Simple math, big savings.

4. Disable Audio Where You Don’t Need It

Audio adds extra data to every recording stream. If you don’t need audio for compliance or if recording audio introduces legal complications turn it off on the cameras where it’s not required.
